Kathy, you have addressed a major symptom of the disease that grips us. So many church groups and charities do so much but it barely makes a dent. The whole economic fabric of Jamaica needs to be repaired so that there is ready employment for the majority of our beggars. We must also change the way the disabled are regarded so that they can take their rightful place in society and not be regarded as outcasts. The social services must address and deal with those women who send out their little children to beg instead of sending them to school.

The unfortunate thing is that the “dons” have so many willing slaves. The problem cannot be solved just by getting rid of the dons, we must also get rid of the system which allows them to flourish.

This says it all. The occupants of these garrisons are as much slaves to these dons and corrupt politicians as their forefathers were to plantation owners. Their “masters” have the right of life or death over them.Keep them in poverty with no prospects and feed them crumbs from the table and they do all your bidding.
There must be investment from government and private sector but this is not going to come until the corruption that pervades all sections of society is rooted out.It is the fuel that stokes the fire.
Now is the time and opportunity to cleanse society of these people.Every effort should be put behind the security forces to root out these criminals , and corrupt politicians of whatever persuasion.Leave no hiding place .

this is the best work on this topic that I have read. I say that not only because I agree with its thesis entirely but because it dispassionately and clearly brings home to any reader, gives everyone the story, in a way that they might absolutely relate with.
